Our Vision for the Present Saint Luke’s sees itself primarily as a Parish Church, serving the needs of the people of Kingstanding, and speaking with and for them. We are heavily committed to a programme of pastoral and social work, and the particular initiatives that exist witness to our desire to meet the needs of the community in spiritual terms but also in terms of social welfare and education. At the heart of the community, Saint Luke’s has been able to form a cohesive people out of a fragmented and broken population, and is one of the few community groups that people in the area belong to. We provide a voice for the community by being involved in community activities. On this estate, as on others, the Clergy are the last professional people left in the area after nightfall. Worship Our worship is evangelistic, involving and engaging, and draws widely on the whole spectrum of Christian tradition. The Daily offering of the Mass in which God is glorified and God’s people nourished on the riches of Word and Sacrament is the centre of our life. The building With the recent completion of a gallery within the church to accommodate additional seating and the organ, the next building project envisaged is the creation of a more obvious entrance and ‘Place of Welcome’ for the Church and Centre. The people A programme of lay education is required to continue the work started by the 3D Course, to expand upon it and so begin to ensure that the people of Saint Luke’s are informed as well as committed on their Christian pilgrimage. Young people Young people are a high priority in the life of Saint Luke’s and, having established a pattern of pilgrimage and outings for them, we wish to resource more adequately our Sunday School, drawing on children in the congregation and our team of young servers, and capitalising on the good relationships established with local schools. The Community Project There is the possibility of adding to our present provision for visually impaired people, the provision of social and medical rehabilitation facilities for those who have had strokes, and the extension of the Kingstanding Sings Project, which brings into local schools the professional work of a Choral Trainer of international reputation. Mission Typical of many housing estate churches, Saint Luke’s runs in order to stand still. It is our desire to establish definite ways of evangelising the community, with the appointment to this present post, and the possibility of a Fan the Flame Mission during the course of 2007/08.
